Brokeback Mountain (2005)

I love movies because they are like magical books. While watching a movie, you can travel through places, time, and even feelings. You can be someone else for a few hours, and be surrounded by images, sounds, and ideas -- all at once. Movies can provide what I call a whole art experience. Brokeback Mountain is unequivocally one of these whole art experiences, and you should give it a try.

This picture's determination to give us a story between two lovers who happen to be men transforms Brokeback from a mere "gay cowboy movie" to a truly timeless classic. What Larry McMurtry (who co-wrote the screenplay with Diana Ossana) said of Pulitzer Prize winner E. Annie Proulx's original short story is equally true of the film: "It was a story that had been sitting there for years, waiting to be told."

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal play Ennis and Jack, respectively, who meet when they are hired to tend a herd of Wyoming sheep in the summer of 1963. And it is there, in harmony with nature, when their love blooms as natural as love can be. Powerful performances by the cast -- in particular Ledger, who can transmit with a gesture a complex set of emotions -- , brilliant music by Gustavo Santaolalla, and masterful direction by Ang Lee, simply confirms that Brokeback Mountain has had justifiably good critical response, with more than 20 international awards to its credit and leading the pack with seven Golden Globe nominations.

Love stories come and go, but this one stays with you – not because it is about two men, but because it is so full of life, emotional tension, and true romance. I'm a lover of love stories, but I can only remember having similarly strong feelings from three other movies: "The English Patient", "Doctor Zhivago", and "Cinema Paradiso". Do not shy away from the film and you will be rewarded with a heart-rending movie experience. You can still catch it at local theaters, including the AMC Tysons Corner 16.
