"'Oh God, oh my God, oh my God.' Was I conceived like this, I wondered, in the suburban night air, to the wailing of Christian curses from the mouth of a renegade Muslim masquerading as a Buddhist?"

Kureishi, Hanif. The Buddha of Suburbia. Chapter 1.

"I tought about the difference between the interesting people and the nice people. And how they can't always be identical. The interesting people you wanted to be with -- their minds were unusual, you saw things freshly with them and all was not deadness and repetition. [...] Then there were the nice people who weren't interesting, and you did't want to know what they thought of anything. Like Mum, [...]."

Kureishi, Hanif. The Buddha of Suburbia. Chapter 7.

"You go all your life thinking of your parents as these crushing protective monsters with infinite power over you, and then there's the day when you turn round, catch them unexpectedly, and they're just weak, nervous people trying to get by with each other."

Kureishi, Hanif. The Buddha of Suburbia. Chapter 15.
